What Is Balayage?
Balayage is a French word that means "to sweep." It refers to a freehand hair colouring technique where colour is painted directly onto the hair — not wrapped in foils — in a way that creates a natural-looking, graduated effect. The colour is darkest at the roots and gradually lightens toward the ends, mimicking how hair naturally lightens in the sun.
The key word is "natural." A well-done balayage should look like you were born with it, not like you had it done. The blending between the dark and light sections should be seamless — no obvious lines, no stripes, no "painted look."
Why Does Balayage Go Wrong So Often?
